FLOOD ALERT - Cameroon Opens Dam

On Monday, 28th August, The federal republic of Nigeria via the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, issued a warning of imminent flooding for all states in the country’s main river frontlines as Cameroon authorized the opening of their Lagdo Dam. The government has estimated the flooding to begin within seven days. The announcement was given during a media briefing of the Presidential Committee set up by the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

During the briefing, Dr Betta Edu acknowledged the fact that the state governments had carried out a lot of activities in preparation for the event and that accounted for the readiness of cooperation between the sub-national and local governments. However, she still urged the Nigeria Governor’s Forum (NGF) to make ample to evacuate citizens living in threatened areas to safer destinations.

She also made mention most citizens were unwilling to leave due to the fear of losing their ancestral homes, despite the warning. She quickly gave assurance that the administration will take it into action to safeguard the properties of citizens affected.

The Minister of Environment, Dr. Iziaq Salako, disclosed that the government had ensured the passing of several warning to states within regions of the Rivers Niger and Benue at an hourly basis. He also stated that a platform would be provided to give journalist real time updates on the flood and activities concerned. He stated that plans would be discussed with Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to create permanent solutions to future flooding menaces. Also, cooperation with the authorities in Cameroon would be ensued to reduce the effects of the damage of the flood  on the lives and properties of Nigerian citizens.
